Hermitage Stream River Restoration Project

In the past, the Hermitage Stream has been heavily modified with concrete walls and an artificially straightened channel. These modifications have affected the natural functioning of the stream and have reduced the diversity of wildlife and habitats.

Groundwork South is working with the Environment Agency to improve the water environment of the Hermitage Stream for people and wildlife. We will do this by restoring the stream to its natural state by removing concrete walls where possible and re-instating old meanders.

The Purbrook Way section was restored 10 years ago.

The river restoration project is now focusing on two sections of the Hermitage Stream at Bushy Lease and Park Community School.

In the future, the Environment Agency hopes to restore two further sections at Barncroft Way and New Road. The plan below shows the location of these sites.

We are currently looking at opportunities to secure funding for the construction stages for the Bushy Lease and Park Community School sections.
